Research
UIC is the only public Carnegie “Research 1” university in Chicago.

UIC Design research tends to focus on three areas of professional design practice: communications and publications, objects and products, and interactions and services.
Independent publishing, information design, and typographic practices are strengths of the Graphic Design faculty. Industrial Design faculty are widely published and recognized for their advances in designed objects, interdisciplinary product development, and design entrepreneurship. A strong interest in design for social impact crosses between disciplines and aligns with the university’s mission.
These areas of creative production do not only motivate the faculty research but also the curriculum, as there is an extremely close relation between what we do and what we teach.
