About Community

Community plays a pivotal role in any design education program, as it nurtures collaboration and shared purpose.

The vibrant community at UIC School of Design is grounded in our robust studio culture, defined by an open and inclusive atmosphere of mutual respect. Students develop not only their technical skills as they engage with faculty and one another, but they also learn to work collectively, address real-world issues, and make meaningful contributions through their design practice.

The design studio is a place of creative production that supports one-on-one interaction between teacher and student, and collaboration between classmates. Students engage in project-based coursework that is informed by their research interests, guided by expert instruction and enriched by critical analysis and creative exchange. We offer the close-knit community of a small school in the context of a large research university where opportunities abound.
