Daria Tsoupikova’s creative practice bridges design of virtual reality (VR), interactive applications, data visualizations, creative coding, and design with media technologies to advance creative expression. She is a second-wave VR practitioner who has developed VR art projects and networked multiuser exhibitions for virtual reality projection systems, such as Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE and CAVE2), for over twenty years. Recent research projects explore how creative solutions can augment virtual rehabilitation for stroke survivors, cultural heritage, interdisciplinary science, and education and advance social change.
A core faculty member at the UIC Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL), she leads Creative Coding courses, design, and CAVE2 VR exhibitions. Daria’s work has been exhibited and published by the ACM SIGGRAPH, Art on the Mart, IEEE VR, VIS, MCA, ISEA, Springer, and Leonardo, among many other venues. Past projects have received funding from the NSF, NEA, National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), and Department of Education.
A former Fulbright Scholar, for more than fifteen years she partnered with the Arms + Hands Lab at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab (SRAL) to develop generations of multiuser virtual environments to aid in hand rehabilitation for stroke survivors.
