2023–24 Public Seminar Series: Renata Graw

Renata Graw is the founder of Normal, a small and independent team of creative thinkers based in Chicago. Their work centers on the belief that thoughtfully designed experiences can have a profound impact on how people interpret the world, and that the most powerful experiences come from close collaboration between clients and creators.

Originally from Brazil, Graw received her BFA from Pontifica Universidade Catolica in Rio de Janeiro and her MFA in Graphic Design from UIC. She studied typography under Wolfgang Weingart at the Basel School of Design and participated in the ISIA/Urbino Summer Workshop under the mentorship of Karel Martens and Armand Mevis.

In 2017, Normal was selected to be part of the Obama Presidential Center’s exhibition design team. Their work has been featured in the New York Times and Eye magazine, and has been recognized by the AIGA, the Art Directors Club, the Type Directors Club, and the STA Archive, among others.

The UIC School of Design public seminar series serves as a research platform for the school’s MDES program, stimulating broad intellectual inquiry about the values guiding the designer by promoting discourse across industrial and graphic design.
