Architecture and Design Open Archive
As shared interests of the School of Design and the School of Architecture, the Open Archive promotes design and architecture as not solely visual or technical but as cultural and intellectual practices with their own disciplinary histories and points of reference that inform their methods and approaches.
This study center supports students and researchers with interests in publishing, history, theory, and criticism—areas of particular strength for the schools.
The Open Archive centralizes archival and reference materials, and anchors and expands programming to promote engagement with these materials, generating new opportunities for the university community and public to encounter the design and architecture thinking that emerges at UIC. It serves students, faculty, researchers, and members of the public interested in architecture and design history and the work of UIC faculty and students past and present. By enabling access to archival holdings, the center promotes both schools’ significant disciplinary accomplishments and provides insight into larger historical narratives of architecture and design in Chicago. Researchers with diverse interests related to design are invited to investigate intersections between artifacts, reference texts, and digitized research material in a collaborative space where research can develop organically. At the same time, the center provides a space for extending and regularizing workshops and exhibitions for the schools, including those directed toward elementary and high school and community audiences.
