Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
The UIC School of Design is proud to be part of a leading public research university where there is no racial majority among its 34,000 students.
UIC Design faculty, staff, and students are committed to actions that promote a more inclusive school. We stand with our BIPOC colleagues and students in solidarity, and we join the College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts in forming and leading initiatives that advance racial equity.
Along with the UIC College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts, our commitment to equity and inclusion has been a declared priority for more than two decades. More recently, the heightened impact of COVID-19 on communities of color and the collective outrage triggered by a parallel pandemic of violence against the Black community inspired a sense of urgency to create more racially balanced work environments.Today, as design leaders nationwide and the local employers of our students respond to an historical moment, we find ourselves at the receiving end of increased demands to provide the diverse workforce that they seek. We welcome the intensified responsibility to amplify diversity in our classrooms, and we are proud to witness how the results of our intensified efforts are doing the same for the field. It is heartening for us, who worked to establish this school, to be arriving where we knew we could and should be—in a position where the UIC School of Design is defining the future of the field.
The UIC School of Design’s commitment to advancing racial equity is supported by a detailed program of existing and planned activities that address a full cycle of engagement from exposure through recruitment, matriculation, graduation, and professional development.
Project Osmosis
Project Osmosis aims to create a legacy for the next generation of designers of color and to provide a safe space for them to develop. For more than 20 years, Project Osmosis—a 501c3 nonprofit—has helped over 10,000 youth in Chicago who were lacking resources explore careers in design.
UIC Osmosis Charles Harrison Scholarship
The UIC Osmosis Charles Harrison Scholarship is designed to bridge creative excellence identified in Osmosis youth programs with the mentorship and financial support that will guarantee success in advanced design studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Samina Quareshi Traveling Fellowship
Inspired by the life and career of the designer for which it is named, the Samina Quraeshi Traveling Fellowship provides funding for UIC Design students to inform and advance research through the discovery of place. The fellowship serves as a statement about open minds and open borders. It is named for a passionate and inspiring leader, once a young Muslim girl warmly welcomed into our country as a high school exchange student. Multiple awards are available each year.
Diversify x Design
UIC Design is proud to be an educational partner of Diversify by Design (DxD), a coalition of NGOs, grassroots organizations, corporations, agencies, associations, educational institutions and individuals with a shared mission to catalyze racial equity and justice in the design professions.
